In order to become a Certified Facilitator of Survival Skills programs, interested individuals must complete an intensive, interactive, three-day training by an SSED trainer and score 80% or better on their oral presentation of a segment of one of the workshops.
Training Objectives
During three days (21 hours) of training, trainees will:
- Familiarize with the developmental history and special features of the selected program
- Understand the program goal and philosophy, and the impact of the program on participants
- Familiarize with the curriculum components and their purpose in the learning process
- Participate in the program implementation planning and discussion
- Assume the role of a participant in a Survival Skills workshop
- Review homework assignments completed by program participants
- Familiarize with the behavioral learning principles incorporated into the program design
- Demonstrate use of effective facilitator behaviors for optimal learning and group management
- Complete a data report utilizing mock workshop materials
- Deliver a program segment, demonstrating competence in following the script and utilizing facilitator behaviors
In addition to training, Survival Skills Facilitators receive:
- Feedback regarding data sheets submitted
- Data summaries provided on request at agency or state level
- Ongoing technical support for program implementation from SSED staff
- Special mailings on program activities and updates
- College credit (available through Kansas State University)
- Continuing education credits (arranged by trainee or trainee’s agency)
- Certification
